24 Understanding a Rubric

A rubric is simply a scoring tool that identifies the various criteria relevant to an assignment or learning outcome, and then explicitly states the possible levels of achievement along a continuum (Unsatisfactory to Exemplary). Rubrics are used to assess all varieties of student work, be it essays, final projects or discussion posts. They will be used to communicate expectations to students for fair and efficient grading, and to assess a program by determining the extent to which students are achieving departmental learning outcomes.

  • Rubrics are located in each of your assignments and discussions.
  • Rubrics outline the assignment competencies and specific criteria in meeting each competency.
  • Notice that each section on a rubric has a specific assigned point value for each criterion.
  • Be sure to align your submission with both the Rubric and the assignment topic.
