Active Engagement Policy

At Bay Path University, we believe that students learn through being actively engaged in their classes, both online and on-ground. Research supports that engagement with faculty and peers is a critical element to student persistence, academic success, and personal development. We therefore expect students to empower one another and to encourage the active and positive participation of peers.

To foster student success, we assess active engagement regularly in all classes as a component of grades. In the majority of online courses, active engagement takes place via robust discussions in the weekly discussion board assignments. In hybrid courses, active engagement typically requires students to post a response to a discussion board prompt, and in-class activities reinforce weekly competencies. In fully on-ground classes, in-person discussions allow students to explore concepts and engage in additional activities to supplement the learning experiences.

  • Faculty assess students each week using rubrics. Helpful feedback to the student is required.
  • Active engagement is graded via rubrics and active engagement grades are entered into the Canvas Learning Management System regardless of modality.
  • Though the typical active engagement assignments are described above, some courses may
structure active engagement in other ways. Students should refer to their Canvas class for
further information on active engagement grading in each course.
