Prokaryotic Cells (Video)

Introduction

All living organisms are composed of cells and have the following similarities:

  • An enclosing plasma membrane which separates the cell’s interior from the environment
  • Cytoplasm made of cytosol in which other components of the cell are found
  • DNA is the genetic material of the cell
  • Ribosomes which synthesize proteins

For all the different, diverse living organisms, there are only two basic types of cells found on earth:

  • Prokaryotes
  • Eukaryotes
